Love can’t wait, the slogan goes. It’s probably worth noting that love couldn’t wait last year or last decade, either, and yet it did. I support marriage equality because it’s a basic human right and because it will surely play a role in bringing about a fairer, more just society. Still, I can’t help thinking that neither our personal dignity nor the validity of any relationships we enter into depends on recognition conferred by any institution. The way I see it, this is not about legitimizing unions but rather about acknowledging the legitimacy of unions that already exist.
